Co-Parenting Therapy

Co-parenting therapy at Autonomy Counseling is a supportive, structured program designed to help parents improve communication and cooperate more effectively after separation or divorce. Its goal is to reduce conflict, enhance teamwork, and create a more stable and healthier environment for children. The program emphasizes education and skill-building and does not serve as an evaluation, provide custody recommendations, or offer legal advice.

A key part of the program is the BIFF approach, created by Bill Eddy, which teaches parents how to communicate briefly, clearly, kindly, and firmly. This method helps minimize escalation and misunderstandings, especially in texts or emails. Parents learn to send clearer messages, stay focused on solutions, and reduce conflict.

Who's It For?

Co-parenting therapy helps families that have communication challenges, conflicts, or inconsistent routines between two households. Its goal is to improve interactions, reduce stress for everyone involved, and support children’s well-being during and after divorce or separation, or when parents are facing co-parenting challenges.

What Does it Look Like?

Co-parenting sessions follow a clear, step-by-step process. Each parent begins with an individual session to review goals, expectations, and communication rules. Then, parents go through the same series of sessions, one step at a time, without rushing. Some sessions are private, while others are joint, in which both parents meet with the therapist to practice skills and solve problems. Between sessions, parents do homework and use brief diary cards to help apply new skills at home.

What Will It Cost?

Insurance may cover this therapy. One option is to bill for one child, starting with a diagnostic assessment, using the family therapy code that doesn’t require the child's attendance. Another option is for each parent to use their own insurance for their individual sessions. Joint sessions can be billed through one parent’s insurance or paid privately. The private rate for joint sessions is $250 per hour. Our administrative team can help you choose the best option for your situation.
